| | Detroit -- U.S. registrations of new hybrid vehicles rose 38 percent in 2007, however they still only made up 2.2 percent of the U.S. market share for the year. The Prius remained the best-selling hybrid and California was once again the top state for hybrid sales.

X Prize Announces New Challenge: A 'Green' Car

| | New York -- The X Prize Foundation is offering a $10 million award for a viable, clean and super-efficient car. Cars participating in the contest will have to hit a minimum speed, achieve a fuel efficiency of at least 100 miles per gallon of gasoline energy equivalent, be ready for production on the market, and also compete in two long-distance stage races in 2009. So far, 64 international teams have signed up for the challenge.

Dirty Cars Banned From German Cities

| | Berlin -- Three German cities began implementing a new air pollution system that bans the dirtiest vehicles from their centers. Drivers in Berlin, Cologne and Hanover are now required to display a colored badge showing the level of pollution caused by their vehicle, with a scale of red, yellow and green. Some vehicles, notably an estimated 1.7 million old diesel cars and vans, will not qualify for even the most polluting red badge and will be prohibited from driving in central areas.

Calif. Sues EPA Over Tailpipe Rules

| | Sacramento -- California sued the federal government in its ongoing bid to set the country's first greenhouse gas limits on cars, trucks and SUVs, providing new data to show its program is superior to a federal plan. The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court of Appeals asks the federal Environmental Protection Agency to review its own decision last month to deny California a waiver it and 16 other states need to regulate greenhouse gases from new cars and trucks.

New York's Yellow Cabs To Go Green By 2012

| | New York -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that all yellow cabs in New York City will be hybrid vehicles by 2012. The standard yellow cab vehicle, the Ford Crown Victoria, gets 14 miles per gallon, whereas the Ford Escape taxis get 36 miles per gallon. In addition, when hybrids run solely on battery power while stopped or at low speeds they don’t release harmful emissions. This plan is part of Bloomberg’s goal of reaching a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
