With Gas Prices Soaring, Americans Driving Less

New York -- Americans drove 1.4 billion fewer highway miles in April compared with the same month last year, and 400 million fewer miles than they did in March, according to the Transportation Department. With Americans driving less and opting for more fuel-efficient vehicles, gasoline demand will likely decline in 2008 for the first time in 17 years, according to the energy consulting firm Cambridge Energy Research Associates. Honda May Mass-Produce FCX Clarity Fuel-Cell Car in 10 Years

Honda Motor Co. may start mass production of its FCX Clarity fuel-cell car within 10 years to meet growing demand for fuel- efficient models. Honda plans to lease 200 FCX Clarity vehicles in the U.S. and Japan over the next three years. Among the customers are producer Ron Yerxa and actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest. U.S. Hybrid Sales Up 38% in 2007; Prius Leads the Pack

Detroit -- U.S. registrations of new hybrid vehicles rose 38 percent in 2007, however they still only made up 2.2 percent of the U.S. market share for the year. The Prius remained the best-selling hybrid and California was once again the top state for hybrid sales. Full Article

X Prize Announces New Challenge: A 'Green' Car

New York -- The X Prize Foundation is offering a $10 million award for a viable, clean and super-efficient car. Cars participating in the contest will have to hit a minimum speed, achieve a fuel efficiency of at least 100 miles per gallon of gasoline energy equivalent, be ready for production on the market, and also compete in two long-distance stage races in 2009. Dirty Cars Banned From German Cities

Berlin -- Three German cities began implementing a new air pollution system that bans the dirtiest vehicles from their centers. Drivers in Berlin, Cologne and Hanover are now required to display a colored badge showing the level of pollution caused by their vehicle, with a scale of red, yellow and green. Some vehicles, notably an estimated 1.7 million old diesel cars and vans, will not qualify for even the most polluting red badge and will be prohibited from driving in central areas. Full Article

Calif. Sues EPA Over Tailpipe Rules

Sacramento -- California sued the federal government in its ongoing bid to set the country's first greenhouse gas limits on cars, trucks and SUVs, providing new data to show its program is superior to a federal plan. The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court of Appeals asks the federal Environmental Protection Agency to review its own decision last month to deny California a waiver it and 16 other states need to regulate greenhouse gases from new cars and trucks. New York's Yellow Cabs To Go Green By 2012

New York -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that all yellow cabs in New York City will be hybrid vehicles by 2012. The standard yellow cab vehicle, the Ford Crown Victoria, gets 14 miles per gallon, whereas the Ford Escape taxis get 36 miles per gallon. In addition, when hybrids run solely on battery power while stopped or at low speeds they don’t release harmful emissions. This plan is part of Bloomberg’s goal of reaching a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. Full Article

Ariz. Car Pool Lane Rule Favors Hybrids

Phoenix -- Under an experimental program, Honda Insight, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius hybrid vehicles will be allowed to use the high-occupancy vehicle lanes on Arizona freeways. Drivers must apply for hybrid-vehicle permits before using the carpool lanes. Full Article

Tax Credits For Some Hybrid Cars Halved

Washington -- The Toyota Motor Corp. has sold 60,000 hybrid vehicles in the U.S. this year. Now that the company has reached its production limit for federal tax credits, the tax break for Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles will be cut in half beginning in October. Full Article

British Inventor Claims to Have Made World's Most Fuel Efficient Car
