Recyclable materials and food wastes

Is it possible to recycle things like pizza boxes, paper plates, plastic plates, or plastic utensils if they contain small amounts of food residue? Does grease or food waste contaminate the recycling process?

FYI- I contacted the local recycler in Knoxville and they said that small amounts of food residue are no problem for the recycling process, but only small amounts. Anything that can be scraped or wiped off should be.
